No Frills Meal : Pancake Dessert House & Pacific Seafood BBQ House

This week I have been satisfying my cravings for comfort food.  So, in this post, I’ll be sharing with you two of my favourite no frills meal and they are from the ‘original’ Pancake Dessert House in CBD and Pacific Seafood BBQ House in Richmond.  The best thing about comfort food is that  I am never sick of them and it calms me tremendously and makes me feel happy all day long 🙂 🙂

Pancake Dessert House never cease to amaze me – the fact that they are still standing strong after so many years prove that they have done something right.   While much of the landscape in Melbourne has changed, they practically stood still in time.  Considering that service is near to zero, the place is not lavish, tables are oily, presentation is sloppy – people keep coming back for more.  It is also very popular with Asian uni students and the working crowd.

As time goes by, most dishes have increased in price and portion of the rice and meat have shrunk.  As always, I have ordered my favourite dishes and they are the Lemongrass chicken chop served with fried egg on rice with fried scallions on the side.  I always ask for an extra bowl of fried scallions because it just tastes so good.  The chicken marinade is flavoursome and grilled deliciously.  Beef flat noodles is as good as always.  The juicy chicken ribs in Deep fried spicy chicken ribs dish is unforgettable.

Pancake Dessert HouseLemongrass chicken chop with fred egg on rice $9.8 / Beef flat noodles $9.8 / Deep fried spicy chicken ribs $9.8

Verdict : You won’t go wrong with Pancake Dessert House.  It’s a no frills eatery serving tasteful and delicious Hong Kong cafe-style meals that will get you craving for more.  Don’t be fooled by the name because it has no association to desserts at all and I just wonder where did that name come from 😉

Another place that hardly disappoints – the original Pacific Seafood BBQ House in Richmond has been there, done that and still a hard one to beat.  After 10 years, this no frills with lightning-speed service eatery has withstand many seasons and will continue to live through many many years.  And when it comes to duck, you can say that Pacific serves bloody good roast ducks!  During peak hours, the queue extends beyond the small restaurant entrance and poor diners will have to cramp elbow-to-elbow in the little dining space with oily floors.

Within 5 seconds of being seated, complimentary Pork rib and peanut soup appears with a teapot of hot chinese tea – talk about speed of execution!  We ordered our usual combination that is Roast Duck, Gai Lan fried with garlic and Siu Yuk.  Damn! the duck’s so good and mouthwatering.  Skin is as crisp as ever and behind those skin are the juicy layers of fat that melts in mouth.  The meat is tender and juicy while the accompanying sauce goes so well with the rice.  Siu yuk is succulently good too.

Pacific House Pork rib and peanut soup (complimentary) / Half Roast Duck $23 / Siu Yuk (Crispy roast pork belly) $20 / Garlic Gai Lan

Verdict : Don’t be fooled by the run down shop front situated in Richmond.  This is a typical Chinese restaurant that does not associate ambience and service with serving delicious food.  After 10 years of operation, Pacific remains as who they are and dishing out what they do best.  In fact, I find this place authentic and honest with their food.  Oh! and I will damn well come back for more of that bloody good roast duck!
